Artist Book: Concept and Design

In this 5 week course we will use the book as a form for artistic expression. Utilizing the Center for Book Arts studios and type collection we will explore the conception and creation of the book as art. Students will have a chance to explore conceptual development; how a book’s structure and design can enhance and integrate part of the work’s meaning. Basic bookbinding structures and letterpress printing techniques will be taught. This course is open to students of all levels and abilities. Students new to book arts should expect to create a basic soft cover edition.
Amber McMillan received her BA in Visual Arts and Economics from Oberlin College. She has been an active member of the Center for Book Arts NYC since 2003. She is the proprietor of Post Editions, a small press specializing in radical editionsn. Amber has served as an instructor at the Center for Book Arts since 2005 and has worked with the Education Committee to develop curricula for Core and Outreach courses.
