Letterpress I: Hand Typesetting

January 24-28, Wednesday – Sunday, 10am-4pm
In this 30-hour crash course in letterpress printing, students will learn the basics of hand typesetting, printing on the Center’s Vandercook presses, the process of editioning, and contemporary practices of letterpress printing. We will cover the essentials of good presswork including inking and impression then move on to discuss typefaces, paper, and incorporating illustrations and color. Students will have the opportunity to design and print a creative project such as a broadside, cards/stationery, or fine art print. No experience required.
Letterpress 1 is part of our Core Curriculum, taught by our Core Instructors. This class (along with Renter Training) will qualify you for unlimited access to our facility and equipment, as well as providing a great foundation in letterpress printing for those beginning professional or artistic careers in letterpress. Alternatively, Letterpress I is now also offered in two successive parts: Letterpress I (A) and Letterpress I (B).
Nancy Loeber is a printmaker and bookbinder living in Brooklyn, NY. She has taught at the Center for Book Arts, Pratt University, Fashion Institute of Technology, and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking.
