Manuscript Illumination Intensive
July 23 - July 27
July 23-27, Monday – Friday 10 am- 4 pm
They Illuminated Bibles, right? Yes and all kinds of Medieval books were illuminated- animal husbandry, medicine, hunting, philosophy, herbology, mathematics, the lives of the saints, you name it. During this 5 day intensive students will learn every step needed to illuminate a manuscript. Techniques include choosing paper and prepping parchment to receive ink, gold leaf and paint, how to gild using various mordants and precious metals, and learning which painting methods work best for parchment and why. Students may use traditional layouts and designs or illuminate their own imagery. Calligraphers and graphic designers are invited to spend part of each day learning to draw illuminated letters, polish their calligraphy, and design projects using both calligraphy and illumination.
By the end of the workshop students will have completed at least one small design, one Illuminated page and a notebook of sample techniques
Karen Gorst is consistently ranked as one of the best living illuminators. She has been ranked as one of the top 100 most influential calligraphers of the entire 20th century, and was named the top calligrapher and manuscript illuminator in Louis Vuitton • Moët Hennessy’s “Made in New York.”
