May 6 – 7, Saturday & Sunday, 10am – 4pm
This course will teach the basics of Turkish water-based paper marbling using traditional marbling inks and acrylics. You will learn how to prepare paper for marbling and beginner to intermediate marbling techniques of mixing and applying colors, raking and combing colors into patterns, and how to lay down the paper. Over two days, you will have the skill and design to produce dozens of unique sheets to use in your other book or book-related work.
The Center will supply paper for students.
Lauren Rowland has been marbling for three decades and has taught her craft at various institutions, and has been an instructor at the Center for Book Arts for twenty years. Lauren specializes in water-based marbling using carrageenan size. Her work includes traditional combed and stone patterns as well as experimental compositions. Lauren’s marbled papers have been used as endpapers in unique and small-press books, as framed art, in craft projects, and reproduced in trade books, magazines and advertisements.
