March 17-18, Saturday & Sunday, 10am-4pm
Prepare yourself to be impressed with our collection of antique wood type! For this two day workshop we are opening up our drawers of borders, wood cuts and type for students to explore and create their own hand set type projects, be it posters or unique art pieces. You will learn how to hand set type and print using one of our 5 Vandercook Presses. Everything from inking to registration multiple colors to creating your first proofs will be covered as you work on your personal pieces. All materials are included for the class and you will leave with your own edition of prints by the end of the weekend.Find out more »
April 10- May 8, 5 Tuesday Evenings, 6-9 pm
Following a short review of press operation and printing techniques, we will raise your printing skills to the next level. What methods can you use to combine text and image? How do you improve your printing results? How do you complete a project involving multiple parts?
This class is designed to support students who have taken a letterpress class and want to work on their own projects in a structured and supportive environment. Students interested in producing a edition of posters or prints, a suite of invitations or other printed stationary, or other projects, will be assisted along the way in troubleshooting their inking, impression, and finishing skills.Find out more »
April 14-15, Saturday & Sunday, 10am-4pm
In this two day workshop, Learn basic printing techniques on the Vandercook proof press, and come away with a collaborative printed edition. We will learn a few basic variations on the single sheet zine, perfect for making a portable edition. We will print up our ideas collaboratively on the press, using wood and metal type, and edition our simple books together. Everyone will come away with multiple copies of a one-page book, models for future reference, and ideas for the future. No previous printing experience required.
April 28-29, Saturday & Sunday, 10am-4pm
In this class we will print a form on the Center's large iron handpress, which was manufactured in New York by R. Hoe and Co. about 1874. The class will include adjustment and oiling of the press, preparing the tympan and frisket, packing, registration, makeready, inking, and workflow. Students should have their page design prepared before the class. It can include type, photoengravings, linoleum of woodblocks as long as everything is type high, and/or photopolymer plates. The platen is 22" x 30" and the tympan will handle a sheet of paper about four inches larger in each dimension.Find out more »
May 5-6, Saturday & Sunday, 10am-4pm
In this course, Students will learn the basics of relief carving and printing on a Vandercook letterpress. We will explore a variety of techniques such as reduction carving, two plate registration, and selective inking. Students will leave the class with the ability to print multiple copies of complex layered images.
No previous printing experience required.
