Leather Bound Books for Beginners
Want to make leather bound books but are intimidated or lack experience? No
previous experience in bookbinding or leather working is needed to create a
beautiful soft leather bound book in a weekend. Add surface design to the
leather covers using linoleum block cuts to create texture, image and color.
Decorative endpapers and a deckled edge text block will complete the aesthetic
of the book. By Sunday afternoon, you will have made one or two fully designed
hand-bound leather books.
September 7 - 8, 10am - 4pm Biruta Auna $205/$230
The Handwritten Text
Embarrassed by your handwriting, but like the look of a hand-written text?
Want to use handwriting to create a one-of-a-kind book, but would rather use
someone else's? Writing rhythmically and re-designing unsightly, illegible
letters, noticeably transforms your writing. Then, experimenting with different
pens and speeds, learn to express different tones of voice. By the end of this
workshop, you'll have a new relationship with your handwriting and learn to
develop writing that is fit for a manuscript!
Section 1: September 8, 10am - 4pm Karen Gorst $90/$115
NOTE: Also offered as a weekday workshop
From Cloth to Book
Do you have special fabric at home that you've always wanted to use for
making books? No need to limit your book creations to commercially produced
materials. In this workshop, participants will learn which fabrics are best for
turning into bookcloth, along with technical demonstrations of laminating and
backing. You will also learn how to back decorative and thin papers for strength
and durability. On the second day, we will make a single-section hardcover book
using the backed materials.
September 14 - 15, 10am-4pm Laurel Parker $190/$215
Paper Marbling
This course will teach the basics of water-based (Turkish) paper marbling
using acrylic and tempera paints. Learn how to prepare paper for marbling as
well as basic marbling techniques. You will then have the opportunity to make
your own marbled papers. We will also examine a variety of marbling patterns.
Students who wish to marble their own specific types of paper should bring them
on the first day of class to be prepared for marbling on day two.
September 14 - 15, 10am - 4pm Lauren Rowland $190/$215
Paste Papers
Discover the fun of drawing through paste infused with color on paper that
yields wonderful patterned designs and layers of colors. The preparation of
paper and pattern-making will be presented, followed by time to experiment with
creating your own unique decorative papers. Consideration will be made for the
wide application of this medium, from end sheets and book or box covers, to
textile designs and wall coverings. Beginners welcome.
Section 1: Saturday September 7, 10am-4pm Sage Reynolds $90/$115
Section 2: Saturday, October 27, 10am - 4pm Sage Reynolds $90/$115
How to Bind Five Eggs
Learn to make an inventive, hand-bound cloth-covered book structure that is
both a book with pages of text, and a box. When opened, the visual flow from the
text to the final hidden shadow box area expresses ideas that complement the
text. During the first day the class will assemble prototypes with shadow boxes
to contain 3-D collage objects. On the second day each participant will design a
custom book structure using varying sizes and depths to suit one's own creation,
based on the first day's experience. Participants do not need to have a
fully-realized concept before the class.
September 21 - 22, 10am - 4pm Kumi Korf $190/$215
Cut, Cover and Stitch
A great class for beginners! Learn to make four different handmade books in
one weekend. Explore basic bookbinding techniques of folding, sewing, cutting,
and covering books. You will produce two non-adhesive books using the pamphlet
stitch and an accordion fold, one flat back book, and a star accordion
book.
Section 1: September 21 - 22, 10am - 4pm Benjamin D. Rinehart $190/$215
Section 2: November 9 - 10, 10am - 4pm Benjamin D. Rinehart $190/$215
FALL OPEN HOUSE

Portfolio Workshop
In one day, we will make two portfolios in different styles, both with ties.
One will be quarter-bound in paper and cloth, the other half-bound with ties and
flaps. Students will be shown how to laminate paper and fabric, and options for
variations in flaps. The end result will be two portfolios, one with flaps and
ties, one with pockets for holding standard sized papers, photos, certificates
or small drawings. This class will lay the foundation for you to make portfolios
of any size, covered in decorative paper or cloth of your choice. Beginners
welcome.
Section 1: Sunday, September 29, 10am - 4pm Sage Reynolds $90/$115
Section 2: Sunday, December 7, 10am - 4pm Sage Reynolds $90/$115
Miniature Books I
Come and create a wonderful array of miniature books, using both traditional
and experimental book structures. An assortment of techniques will be employed,
from pop-ups to sewing, including some with covers to complement the particular
piece. Bring collage elements, your favorite stamps and anything else you would
like to incorporate in your books. A brief history of miniature books will also
be covered.
Section 1: Sunday, September 29, 10am - 4pm Maria G. Pisano $90/$115
Section 2: Sunday, December 8, 10am - 4pm Maria G. Pisano $90/$115
Decorative Boxes
This workshop is a great introduction to book arts. Students will learn
traditional techniques and materials (similar to those used in bookbinding) to
create two beautiful boxes, one with a separate lid, the other with an attached
hinged lid. These boxes are perfect for storing photos, collectibles or
treasured objects. Students should bring their own decorative paper to class.
October 5 - 6, 10am - 4pm Carolyn Chadwick $190/$215
Basic Book Repair
Students will bring two or three cloth bound books- one round back and one
flat-back- with minimal damage to the text block (torn pages, several detached
or loose pages) and damage to the spines. There will be demonstrations of basic
paper repairs with Japanese tissue and paste, how to tip in detached pages, and
how to dry-clean paper. Then we will prepare text blocks for re-backing and/or
re-casing. On the second day, students will make repairs to the bindings and
finish their projects. If time permits, we will talk about basic housing
techniques, such as mylar wrappers, four-flap enclosures, and pamphlet binders.
Students should have basic bookbinding experience for this workshop.
October 5 - 6, 10am - 4pm Jennifer Savran $190/$215
NEW! How to Make 3 Photograph Albums
There are three basic approaches to album-making, defined by the page
format: an extended accordion, a stack of single sheets, or a set of folded
sections. by keeping our models small, we will make prototypes of three
structures as we explore both the advantages and the limitations of a given
style. Decisions are based on variables as diverse as: the number of photos; the
size of a sheet of paper; the availability of book-binding equipment; the
methods of mounting the photos on the book pages. We will fold, sew, glue - and
do an awful lot of talking over these two days! Beginners welcome.
October 12 - 13, 10am - 4pm Barbara Mauriello $190/$215
NEW! Large Paper into Small Spaces: Creating
Books with Foldouts
Components of the atlas are the basis for this workshop on construction of
books with foldout plates. We will explore this subject through: (1) hands on
production of various page make-up options and single plates in booklet format
(2) examination and discussion of sample bindings from the instructor's
collection, and (3) a slide show of historical atlases that demonstrate the
features of successful structures.
October 12 - 13, 10am - 4pm Pamela Spitzmueller $190/$215
Japanese Bookbinding
Learn a variety of Japanese binding techniques using traditional Japanese
papers and fabrics to produce unique works. Construct side-sewn binding and
through-the-fold structures, as well as a special cloth-covered folding box to
hold the books. The end result is a beautiful, boxed set of books.
October 19 - 20, 10am - 4pm Yukari Hayashida $190/$215
NEW! The Pocket Hand Book
A book that fits in the hand that fits in the pocket that fits in the hand.
You know the one. You want it with you all the time, right there, in your
pocket, handy, cause it is just the right size. After examining a few pocket
hand books, we will begin by folding a comfortable size cover for the hand, then
from pre cut material consider sewing options, compartment, optional closures
and complete 2 or 3 handsome books. There will be plenty of materials but I
suggest you bring personal imagery and support papers as back-up materials.
October 19 - 20, 10am - 4pm Denise Carbone $190/$215
NEW! The Four-Room Book
At first glance, this book appears to be conventional. But, when you
open the cover, a three-dimensional layout suggestive of four rooms
complete with floors and walls unfolds. The complicated appearance of this book
belies its simple structure. In this one day workshop we will construct several
models of the Four-Room Book, exploring structural variations. We will indulge
our sense of whimsy with the addition of pop-ups, doors, windows, text, images
and decorative layers of color.
Saturday, October 26, 10am - 4pm Paula Beardell Krieg $90/$115
NEW! All About the Accordion
The accordion is perhaps the most versatile structure in the world of
bookbinding. As a full-page spread, or as a minutely pleated piece of paper, it
displays both pictures and words in an immediate and Zen-like game of mountains
and valleys. We will spend two days folding and sewing, and occasionally dipping
into a bowl of paste, as we construct a set of five small models. Beginners
welcome.
October 26 - 27, 10am - 4pm Barbara Mauriello $190/$215
Tunnel Books
A tunnel (or peephole) book is an accordion of pages bound on two sides and
viewed through a central opening producing a 3-D effect. in this workshop,
students will learn the basics of designing and constructing a tunnel book by
exploring the exciting possibilities for adapting this format to each person's
own style. Historical examples will be presented in a short slide
lecture. November 2 - 3, 10am-4pm Carol Barton $190/$215
Basic Bookbinding
Learn to make a classic clothbound hard-cover book. The flatback case opens
flat and is suited to a slim volume of poetry or a hefty dictionary; to a tiny
miniature book or a really big book. For beginners, building a flatback case is
a good introduction to hand bookbinding fundamentals. Those with more experience
will review and refine skills to gain confidence in one of the standard
structures of bookbinding. Bind a blank book any size you wish, or bring
prepared signatures.
November 2 - 3, 10am - 4pm Susan Mills $190/$215
Coptic Binding
Coptic is an ancient style of binding that adapts beautifully to
modern materials. This versatile binding style is the perfect option for
using wood, metal, plastic or other unusual materials for covers. Completely
non-adhesive with an exposed spine, Coptic books lay flat when opened and can be
expanded to a full 360 degrees. We will fold, punch and sew three text blocks,
each using a different cover variation. We will also learn to bend needles into
the necessary shapes to sew these timeless books. No previous bookbinding
experience necessary.
November 9 - 10, 10am - 4pm Susan Mills $190/$215
The Voluminous Page
Traditionally we think of pages as the recto and verso of leaves,
either single or as part of folded sections. In this workshop we will
focus on layers, extensions and three-dimensional built-ups to elevate the
flatness of the page, to expand its boundaries. The interplay of light and
shadow, the discovery and disappearance of things contained within the book are
important features. Several binding structures are adapted to fit the concept of
the voluminous page. When displayed these books reveal more than ordinary page
spreads. As time allows, we will outfit one book with images, words, and
textures using innovative techniques.
November 16 - 17, 10am - 4pm Hedi Kyle $190/$215
NEW! Two Books in a Box
These two small, chunky books - both based on historical models - are a
celebration of the joys of sewing. The Tacket Binding and the Long Stitch
Binding, sewn into paper cases, are defined by the links of colorful stitching
parading up and down the spines of the books. The box is built to protect and to
display both volumes in a single-family house. Beginners welcome.
November 16 - 17, 10am - 4pm Barbara Mauriello $190/$215
More Chinese Bookbinding
We will build on the skills learned in Chinese Bookbinding I to make
traditional bindings not created in the introductory class. We will construct a
"gold-edged-in-jade" conservation binding and models for other styles
of string-bound books. In the process we will learn how to fold, interleave,
tip, laminate, hand trim and stitch flexible Chinese papers. All of our
materials are from China. Chinese Bookbinding I or Japanese Bookbinding is a
prerequisite.
November 23 - 24, 10am - 4pm Nancy Tomasko $190/$215
plus an additional materials fee.
Miniature Books II (or conservation enclosures)
Miniature books are challenging due to their size limitations. There are no
limitations however to their potential as vessels and artifacts for both visual
and written expressions. The class will create an array of personalized book
structures that reflect the individual's experiences through patterns, designs
and some text- from traditional book structures to more sculptural creations.
November 23 - 24, 10am - 4pm Maria G. Pisano $190/$215
NEW! Wiggly Cords
When your friends look at your books, do they say "Wow, you have so
much patience," while you think to your self, "I'm not really patient,
I'm just obsessed"? If you are looking to add texture, drama and something
wonderfully unusual to your books, then this is the class for you. Learn to
create book structures with "hyper packed cords" that leap off the
spine of the book and curl around to create a new dimension that will add
dimension to your books. Please note that this is a pretty labor intensive
technique, but wiggly cords can also be beaded, for those of you who are truly
obsessed. We will discuss the possibilities during the class. Beaded Binding I
is required (or instructor's permission)
