Catalog for the Literate Letterpress exhibition of finely printed editions of works by contemporary authors which ran at Center for Book Arts (Book Arts Gallery) from March 4 – 25, 1987. Authors represented include James Dickey, Galway Kinnell, James Merrill, and W.D. Snodgrass, among others.

‘Literate Letterpress’ features works of contemporary literature that have been printed by the relief process of letterpress. The books in this exhibition are the result of a very special kind of collaboration between author and publisher — these publishers also design the layout, generally handset the author’s words in metal type, hand print each sheet, and often illustrate and bind the volumes themselves or work closely with other artists to bring the author’s words to the reader in a most effective and satisfying way. -Carol Sturm, Curator.

Featuring work by: Oliphant Press, Richard Bigus, Frances Butler, Harry Duncan, William Everson, Claude Fredericks, Richard Gabriel-Rummonds, Walter Hamady, Alastair Johnston, Gunnar Kaldewey, John L. Risseeuw, Carol Sturm, Claire Van Vliet, Doug Wolf.
