Threading Paper: Intro to Pamphlet Stitch

This class takes place across two sessions:
Tuesday, December 15, 10am-12pm EDT
Thursday, December 17, 10am-12pm EDT

This two-day two-hour course will cover 3-hole pamphlet, 5 hole pamphlet and pamphlet with enclosed cover. In learning this intro-level binding style and a few variations, participants will practice techniques of working with needle and thread upon paper. Examples of artists’ books using related techniques will be shown to demonstrate the versatile utilities of this elegant craft.

Students should have the following materials:

Project 1:

  • 20 sheets of text weight paper, 8.5 x 11 in (letter size)
  • 2 sheets of cover weight paper, 8.5 x 11 in (letter size)
  • 1 sheet of cover weight paper, 5.5 x 12 in

Project 2:

  • 1 sheet of cover weight paper, 17 x 5.5 inch, short grain (the grain direction is parallel to the short side of the paper)
  • 15 sheets of text weight paper, 5.5 x 8.5 inch, short grain (the grain direction is parallel to the short side of the paper)

Tools:

  • bone folder, or a butter knife
  • exacto knife, or snap-off blade knife
  • cutting mat
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • awl, or a pushpin
  • thread
  • needle
  • 2 binder clips
