Metropolitan Engagement Book – The Weekly Pages
In 2009, I began adding collage elements to the reproductions on each weekly page on the Metropolitan Museum of Art Engagement Book, my calendar of choice for as long as I can remember. Items selected come from a variety of sources: brochures or postcards from exhibits I’ve visited or events attended, articles of personal interest primarily from the New York Times, newly released postage stamps, current art projects, photos taken on city strolls, or whatever quirky item crosses my path. The only criterion is that these elements be acquired, created or found during the corresponding week, making each collage, in essence, a visual diary.
ELAINE NORMAN combines photography, painting and collage to create much of her work, drawing inspiration from the eclectic streets of her adopted city of New York. Her mixed-media and photo-collage illustrations have been commissioned by a diverse group of clients, including Farrar Straus & Giroux, Barron’s Financial Weekly and the Transit Museum, among others. Her collages and photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries nationwide. Selected public collections include the Museum of the City of New York, The Brooklyn Public Library and Arquitectonica.
