Endgrain Designs and Repetitions

The Pattern Papers of John DePol

Cathleen A. Baker, proprietor of The Legacy Press, has published a letterpress printed book of the same title featuring DePol’s pattern papers.

Since the 1950s, the American master of wood engraving, John DePol, has been cutting small endgrain blocks featuring subjects from nature, the heavens, and the Book Arts, as well as fantastic abstract, geometric designs. Although many of these images have been made into patterns and used as binding papers in a number of important fine press books, the full breadth of this particular aspect of DePol’s artistry has never before been exhibited. Baker is curator of the exhibit which features 117 of DePol’s pattern papers.

Support for the Center for Book Arts’ visual arts programming is provided, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
