Bookbinding I (A): Soft Cover Books (Days)

March 10-12, Friday – Sunday, 10 am-4 pm
Fold, sew, and glue paper into books! In this 18-hour introductory class you will fold accordion books and explore concertinas, sew pamphlets with paper covers, glue single pages into butterfly books, and more. This class is suitable for beginners and also for anyone looking for basic models that can be made at home without special equipment. No experience required.
Bookbinding I, part of our Core Curriculum and taught by our Core Instructors, is now offered in two successive parts: Bookbinding I (A) and Bookbinding I (B). Taking the two classes together is equivalent to our Bookbinding I (A+B) section.
For this class, all materials are included, but please bring the following tools with you to each class. Tools marked with a star (*) are available for purchase at the time your class starts.
Cutting tool such as scalpels,* X-acto knives, and Olfa snap blades (strongly preferred)
Pin tool* or Awl*

Beth Sheehan is a printmaker, paper maker, and book artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She is currently the bindery manager at Small Editions in Brooklyn. Sheehan was also a 2015-16 Scholar for Advanced Studies in Book Arts at the Center for Book Arts. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum, GA; and the Center for Book Arts, NY, among others. Sheehan has taught workshops at Cooper Union, the Morgan Conservatory, Dieu Donné, and the Center for Book Arts.
