Hudson Valley Book Arts Tour
Sunday, June 10, 2018, 9 am – 8 pm
Come join friends of the Center for Book Arts, Grolier Club, Friends of Dard Hunter, and other book and paper-loving organizations on Sunday, June 10, 2018, from 9am-8pm, for a special trip to the west side of the Hudson River, with special tours at Gomez Mill House, Thornwillow Press, Storm King Art Center, and the country home of book collector Szilvia Tanenbaum.
Our first stop, at the Gomez Mill House and Dard Hunter Paper Mill in Marlboro, will feature a tour of the oldest standing Jewish dwelling in North America as well as the paper mill where, in 1912, American hand papermaker Dard Hunter re-established hand papermaking in North America.
We will travel to Thornwillow Press in Newburgh, where proprietor Luke Ives Pontifell, will regale us with handmade books and paper, as well as lunch at his press. Thornwillow has produced finely printed books for 35 years, 15 of them in Newburgh. Adjunct to the press is The Thornwillow Institute which teaches and perpetuates the related arts and crafts of the written word through fellowships, residencies, workshops and the sponsorship of publications, exhibitions and events.
Refreshed, we journey then to Storm King Art Center, an open-air museum located in Mountainville. We will be joined by David R. Collens, Director & Chief Curator, for an exclusive tour of what is perhaps the largest collection of contemporary outdoor sculptures in the United States, set on 500 acres of rolling hills, woodlands, and fields. The core collection includes pieces by modern masters, such as Alexander Calder, David Smith, Mark di Suvero, Henry Moore, Douglas Abdell, Isamu Noguchi, Richard Serra, and Louise Nevelson.
We will conclude with libations and nibbles at the country home of Center for Book Arts Board Member and Grolier Club member, Szilvia Szmuk-Tanenbaum, where participants can relax, enjoy amazing views, schmooze with new friends, and take a dip in an indoor heated pool—no skinny dipping allowed!
We will depart from Manhattan’s Upper East Side at 9am, and return by 8pm the same day. The day-trip cost will be $200 for members of the Center for Book Arts, Grolier Club, Dieu Donné and Friends of Dard Hunter, and $225 for non-members. All costs of the tour will be included (transportation, lunch, and admissions). The day-trip cost for people driving themselves will be $100 for members and $125 for non-members (including lunch and admissions, but not parking).
