Roni Gross is a book artist whose work is in the collections of The Library of Congress, Harvard, Yale, and many other public and private collections. She runs Z’roah Press which produces limited edition sculptural books.

Gross has been an instructor at Center for Book Arts teaching letterpress technique and much more for a number of years. In 2019 she initiated the Book Talk series that continues to feature a diverse range of artists and scholars.

Artist’s Statement

In my work, I pursue several ongoing inquiries including expressing the sculptural aspect of letterpress, encapsulating language in structures, and investigating cultures.

The limited edition books I produce under my imprint Z’roah are collaborations with the sculptor Peter Schell. Z’roah publications are inspired by evocative subjects like “water,” “the particularity of the color red,” “the sensual experience of the blind,” and “the gradual reduction of sound and movement at the end of the day.” The materials used to fabricate Z’roah publications are equally as important as the text they contain, making the physicality of handling the books integral to experiencing them.

I also produce work as part of my extensive Zitouna projects, which are centered around themes of love and death – for instance, “the mating of toothbrushes” “or the alchemy of a person’s life.”
