Event Info

The Center’s Broadside Reading Series produces 12 limited-edition letterpress-printed broadsides each year, featuring the works from poets of various backgrounds and writing styles.

This evening’s reading will feature the poets Brian Teare & Monica Youn; and broadsides designed and printed by Kevin Umaña & Kathleen Ma.

The spring 2019 season was organized by Stephen Motika.

Readers

Monica Youn is the author of Blackacre (Graywolf Press, 2016); Barter (Graywolf Press, 2003); and Ignatz (Four Way Books, 2010), which was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including the New Yorker, the Paris Review, and the New York Times Magazine, and she has been awarded fellowships from the Library of Congress and Stanford University, among other awards. A former attorney, she now teaches poetry at Princeton University and is a member of the Racial Imaginary Institute.

Brian Teare is the author of five critically acclaimed books, most recently Companion Grasses, a finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Award, and The Empty Form Goes All the Way to Heaven. His sixth book, Doomstead Days, is just out from Nightboat Books. His honors include Lambda Literary and Publishing Triangle Awards, and fellowships from the NEA, the Pew Foundation, the American Antiquarian Society, the Headlands Center for the Arts, and the MacDowell Colony. An Associate Professor at Temple University, he lives in South Philadelphia, where he makes books by hand for his micropress, Albion Books.

Artists

Kevin Umaña lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Umaña received a B.F.A. from San Francisco State University with a degree in Printmaking. He is a 2018/19 Center For Book Arts artist in residence awardee has exhibited nationally and internationally with Joshua Liner Gallery,NY, 80WSE Gallery, NY, SIM Gallery,Reykjavik, Koppel Project Hive,London, In Live, Taipei City, Bass & Reiner, SF and in 2018 completed a residency through the Sím Residency in Reykjavik, Iceland and Plop Residency in London, England. He’s collaborated with Condé Nast, Wired Magazine, London College of Music and Slowdown Studio and in 2017 created a permanent installation at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

Kathleen Ma is a Queens-based artist and writer. She works in a wide range of media, including photography, video, graphic design, writing, collage, and zines.

Curator

Stephen Motika is the Director & Publisher of Nightboat Books. He was for many years on the staff of Poets House in New York City. The author of the poetry collection Western Practice (2012) and the poetry chapbooks Arrival and At Mono (2007), In the Madrones (2011), and Private Archive (2016), Motika is also the editor of Tiresias: The Collected Poems of Leland Hickman (2009) and co-editor of Dear Kathleen: On the Occasion of Kathleen Fraser’s 80th Birthday (2017).
