Exhibitions and Publications Manager


Part time, 20-26 hours per week

Pay: $36,000 – $40,000 annual (prorated)

Reports to: Executive Director

Center for Book Arts seeks an Exhibitions and Publications Manager to lead CBA’s exhibitions program and publications as interconnected expressions of a single institutional argument: that book art is a medium in its own right, with a rich history and a vital present. This part-time position, with the opportunity to expand to full-time depending on performance and organizational capacity, is responsible for developing and executing a coherent, multi-year exhibition program; overseeing all related publications; and managing the Exhibitions Assistant and interns. The Exhibitions and Publications Manager reports to the Executive Director and is a central voice in shaping CBA’s identity as a field-leading institution.


Position responsibilities:


Exhibitions Program

  • Plan and execute a thoughtful, mission-aligned calendar of exhibitions.
  • Work with curators, artists and lenders, manage loan agreements and artist contracts, and oversee installation from concept through opening.
  • Build and maintain relationships with artists, curators, scholars, and critics who can strengthen CBA’s curatorial voice and visibility.
  • Plan and execute related public programs (lectures, panels, and artist talks) that deepen engagement with the exhibition program.
  • Collaborate with the Librarian to ensure exhibitions draw on and contribute to CBA’s collection and archive.

Publications

  • Oversee the production of CBA publications including catalogues, broadsides, chapbooks, and limited editions.
  • Hire and manage artists, designers, editors, and printers as needed for each publication.
  • Maintain a defined annual publications scope in coordination with the Executive Director and Deputy Director.
  • Oversee distribution and sales of publications.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise the Exhibitions Assistant and interns in all aspects of exhibition installation, production, and book arts fabrication.
  • Bring strong project management and communication skills to every aspect of the role, from coordinating complex production timelines to keeping collaborators and stakeholders aligned across multiple concurrent projects.

Organizational Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Deputy Director to secure grant funding for exhibitions and publications.
  • Collaborate with the Studio Programs Manager to ensure outreach programming connects audiences to the exhibition program.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and records of exhibitions, events, attendance, revenue, and demographics.
  • Market exhibitions and publications through email, social media, and print campaigns in collaboration with communications staff.

Qualifications


Required Experience:

  • 3–6 years of curatorial, programming, or publications experience at an arts organization, gallery, museum, or comparable institution 
  • Deep familiarity with book arts history and contemporary practice, including the critical discourse around artists’ books as a medium, with knowledge of the international artists’ book and book arts scene strongly preferred 
  • Experience managing publications or other complex projects from concept through production and distribution 
  • Exceptional project management and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and communicate clearly with artists, collaborators, and institutional partners 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Experience working with artists, lenders, designers, and fabricators 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small, mission-driven team 
  • MFA, MA in art history, curatorial practice, book arts, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered
