In the spring of 1975, Fandangos editor Madeleine Allegrini met with Costa-Gavras, a Greek-French film writer and director, in Paris to conduct a video interview. Costa-Gavras is best known for his 1969 film Z, which depicts the assassination of Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis by right-wing extremists and the subsequent revolution against the Royal Court of Greece. In the interview, they discuss power, justice, and the filmmaking process through the lens of another political film by Costa-Gavras: State of Siege.
A transcript of the interview is published in issue 8.9.10.11 of Fandangos. Eamon Costello, our curatorial and programs intern, translated the transcript from French to English with the aim of continuing to examine the magazine-newspaper while its issues are on display at Center for Book Arts. We hope you enjoy reading it!
