The Space Between Words brings together Aarati Akkapeddi, Valentina Améstica, Rujuta Rao, Audra Wolowiec and Kyung Eun You, five artists working in the studios at Center for Book Arts, each reimagining what it means to read, to publish, and to engage with the book as an evolving, living form. Across print, code, sound, textile, and performance, these works inhabit the margins, silences, and gestures that traditional forms often overlook.
Whether tracing the loops of ancient floor drawings through code, listening for language in breath and punctuation, or composing scores for bodies marked by memory and care, the artists in this exhibition approach reading as an embodied, relational act. Through fragmented visuals, dissolving texts, sound, sculptural forms, and publications that hold both tenderness and urgency, these works invite us to read through touch, memory, rhythm, and repetition — in places where meaning isn’t fixed, but felt, sensed, or quietly called into action.
