BookTalk. Tomorrow’s Past: Rebinding Antiquarian Books with Modern Sensibility
Join us on Tuesday, November 19 at 12pm EST, for Tomorrow’s Past: Rebinding Antiquarian Books with Modern Sensibility an online BookTalk via Zoom with Kathy Abbott. This is part of Center for Book Arts ongoing BookTalk series—presentations related to the book arts curated and moderated by CBA Instructor Roni Gross.
In this Book Talk, Kathy Abbott (UK) will share the work of the international bookbinding collective Tomorrow’s Past.
The guiding principle of the group is that if an antiquarian book is beyond repair, then it is an opportunity to rebind the book with modern sensibilities, rather than just reprise a pastiche-style binding.
The collective has included binders from all around the world, including: UK, Italy, France, The Netherlands and Argentina. All of the members work professionally as bookbinders, book conservators and teachers, and most handle books of many different types and periods in their everyday work.
This fusion of experience and historical awareness, along with modern conservation materials, techniques and skill, has produced work that is radical in its simplicity, ingenuity, and truth to materials.
