Devin Morris

Bio

Devin N. Morris (b. 1986, Baltimore, MD) studied Fashion Merchandising at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, MD and Journalism and New Media, Towson University, MD. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Through his mixed media paintings, photographs, writings, and videos, Morris collapses personal experience, memory, and space to delicately envision new realms. The artist considers his upbringing in Baltimore and navigating the world as a black queer man in his depictions of real and imagined characters engaged in acts of kindness and care. His explorations of the domestic space, including collage and immersive environments, place the viewer inside abstracted rooms that subvert traditional values and social boundaries. In 2018, Morris was selected for The Aesthetics of Matter- the curatorial project by Duex Femme Noires: Mickalene Thomas and Racquel Chevremont, presented at VOLTA, New York, NY. In 2017, he was named by Time Magazine as one of “12 African American Photographers You Should Follow.” Morris is the founding editor of 3 Dot Zine. He has been in numerous exhibitions, including The New Museum, New York, NY; AC Institute, New York, NY; MoMA PS1, New York, NY; Yale School of Art, New Haven, CT; Terrault Contemporary, Baltimore, MD; High Tide Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; Lubov, NY; Company, NY; George Washington University, Washington, DC; and KMAC Museum, Louisville, Kentucky, KY.

Devin was 2020 CBA Workspace Artist-in-Residence.
