From the title to its contents, Down the Hatch is a homage to the literary phenomenon known as a homophone. Defined as two or more words that have the same spelling and pronunciation, but different meanings, this book truly encapsulates the spirit of the homophone by playing on the noun “submarine”. Providing a diagram of a feared naval vessel crossed with a hearty lunchtime meal, the humor that may occur as a result of a misinterpreted homophone is revealed and can provide more insight into this literary device in a fun and playful way.
