During the 2016 presidential debates I began to despair over all of the talk about environmental destruction in the name of resource extraction and climate change. I was feeling this strong sense of connection with the earth. I began to feel that this connection could never be broken no matter what happened and I started writing these thoughts down and soon had the poem that appears in the book. I created the imagery by layering prints on paper until things became clear to me with each print. Then I refined the imagery on each page and added the text. The versos feature hand sewn shapes of sacred geometry. Keepsake is about those things that become inexorably and eternally intertwined with our bodies and souls.
Keepsake is an artists’ book designed, printed and bound by Elizabeth Castaldo of Forest Magic Press in 2016. It was made with relief printing and photopolymer plates, with hand stitching on various papers. The book measures 4 inches in diameter, consists of 11 unbound pages and is enclosed in a mercury glass dish. It was produced in an edition of 12, with colophon signed and numbered by the artist.
