Getting the Language into Our Hands: A Collective Conversation and Intimate Workshop on Reading
In this online workshop, participants are invited to visit the the exhibition, Out of Sight, Beyond Touch and experience Un-Furling and Only Velvet Feels Like Velvet, in order to translate this reading of text into their own language. To touch the book gives a sensory embodiment of revelation. After the gathering of written responses, each participant reads another’s response and in turn shares a re-telling through their reading. Every reading is a re-making, and continues as repetition with difference.
This conversation explores intertextuality as a transposition of elements into a field of memory. This field of transmission carries various relations of displacement as well as processes of transition and transformation. The passage from one to another. The workshop points to this precisely. The bringing forth of something out of itself—a poieses as such.
Amina Ahmed was born in East Africa, of Kutchi-Indian Turkiq (Uzbek) heritage, grew up in England and has lived in Iran and the US. She specialized in Islamic and Traditional Arts at The Royal College of Art. Physically and spiritually, her drawings are grounded in the practice of geometry, continually referencing ‘geometry in nature’. Ahmed explores the relationships between line and form, shadow and substance, the visible and hidden. As an educator, her projects are informed by human rights, coalition building and folk art. Selected exhibitions include The Show Room in London, Frieze NYC with Jhaveri Contemporary, at Heidelberger Kunstverein Germany.
