About the Workshop:
This in-person workshop is taught by Barbara Mauriello.
In this pochoir-to-book workshop, we’ll cut stencils (2 shapes), design a book page using these simple shapes, and paint the pages using no more than two colors per page. These shapes can be manipulated to form different patterns, and the colors can change from page to page. The challenge is to do as much as possible with as little as possible. We’ll bind our editions of two books into double-sided accordion-fold books, with handmade paper wrappers — no cloth, no boards, no adhesives. (Think about stenciling the wrappers, too.)
Inspiration for this workshop is everywhere—look at the exquisite geometry of Islamic tiles; the minimalism of the Bauhaus (Sophie Taeuber-Arp!); the small repeat patterns in Japanese textiles (Komom).
No previous bookbinding or painting skills are required!
Fun Fact: Pochoir prints (one of the techniques used to decorate pages in this workshop) is a stenciling method most popular during the 1920s, and can be seen in many art deco fashion prints.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
- Pencil and paper for taking notes
- scalpel, x-acto or other cutting tool, with replacement blades. (The best carbon steel blades, #23 for a #4 handle, are Swann-Morton, available online from www.azream.us)
- Bonefolder
- Paint-mixing tins, if you have any
- 2 tins or other containers, to hold your brushes
- Self-healing cutting mat
- Gouache paints, a few tubes of your favorite colors, plus white
- Stencil brushes: one small and one large (or more!) Dick Blick has a good selection. I like da Vinci #10, #14, and #20; Robert Simmons 960 series, #1 and #1 ¼
OPTIONAL MATERIALS:
- Apron
Participants should think about pattern. The best approach is the simplest: think geometry! Come with a few ideas in mind, or an interpretation of a traditional source of patterns (quilts, tiles, rugs, architectural details).
