About the Workshop:
This in-person class with Instructor Sarah Nicholls will introduce students who already have some book arts experience to hardcover bookbinding.
Participants will learn to make hardcover case bindings for pamphlets, flat back books, and a book with a rounded spine.
In addition, Nicholls will guide students through using book cloth to cover the structure beneath the boards. Several sewing techniques will also be covered, including sewing signatures together with link stitch.
Class size is limited to ensure an optimal student-to-teacher ratio. Register now before the remaining spots fill up!
Required Materials:
All staff, artists, students, and guests are required to show proof of vaccination upon entering CBA and must wear a mask covering the nose and mouth at all times. Please email info@centerforbookarts.org if you have any questions.
- Pencil and paper for note-taking
- Bookbinding awl
- Bone folder
- Olfa silver knife and blades or X-acto knife
- Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get stained or dirty

About the Instructor
Sarah Nicholls is an artist, printmaker, and writer whose work combines language, image, visual narrative, and time.
She publishes an ongoing series of letterpress pamphlets on climate change, urban ecology, and the history of science and technology, and organizes a range of participatory walks and programs around the series.
Nicholls’ limited edition artist books are in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, Columbia University, and Stanford, among others.
Her work has received support from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Brooklyn Arts Council, and the Puffin Foundation, and she has participated in residencies at BRIC House in Brooklyn, the Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts, and Guttenberg Arts in NJ.
Nicholls teaches letterpress and book arts at Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
