About the Workshop:

This in-person class at Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Ana Cordeiro.

In this 12-hour advanced class, you will make an inboard cloth-covered book with round spine and hand-sewn end bands, to be bound on split boards. This binding has the text block sewn on ramieband supports, which will be laced in the hard cover boards. Students will learn how to prepare a set of split boards, in addition to rounding the spine and sewing silk thread end bands by hand. This class prepares the student for leather binding and other advanced and historical structures.

Please note: Since this is a more advanced course, we highly recommend that students have taken our other bookbinding courses before enrolling in this one, or have other previous bookbinding experience. Included in this workshop are 6 studio hours available for you to use during the week following the workshop. More information about this will be provided upon registration.

Required Materials:

  • Pencil and paper for note-taking
  • Bookbinding awl
  • Bone folder
  • Olfa silver knife and blades, or X-acto knife

All other materials will be provided by Center for Book Arts at no additional cost.
