About the Workshop:
This in-person workshop is taught by Hadley Vogel.
Learn how to work with leather to create contemporary hard cover bindings for you upcoming book projects. In this course, students will learn how to sew a textblock and case-in a hardcover leather book using leather hinges and doublures.
This class will delve into the aesthetics of leather binding, employing traditional motifs and learning contemporary techniques and tools. This is a workshop designed to help book artists get a taste of the magic of working with leather leather. Some previous bookbinding experience is necessary for this workshop.
Fun Fact: Leather binding was very popular during the medieval ages, due to its protective capabilities as well as the opportunity to emboss mesmerizing shapes and patterns into its surface.

About Hadley Vogel
Hadley Vogel (b. 1987) is a second generation bookbinder who apprenticed from an early age under her father Paul Vogel of the Vogel Bindery in East Hampton, NY. In addition to her apprenticeship on Long Island, Hadley worked under master binder Martín Farfán Patiño, of Farfán Encuadernadores, Mexico City, MX, where she honed her skills, focusing on restorations of historic volumes from Mexican museum and institutional collections. Since the opening of Hadley Hill Bindery, she has focused on the development of experimental forms, including plush bindings and the use of recycled fur, melding contemporary aesthetics with traditional construction processes.
