About the Workshop:

This in-person workshop is taught by CBA instructor Esther K Smith.

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to learn one new book structure per week. You will explore a variety of basic folding and stitching techniques through instant books, thru accordion, pamphlet, stab stitch, and simple popups.

This workshop will offer strategies for generating content and making quick models of books, structural approaches to artists’ books, and collaborative exercises to generate content. This class is aimed for both artists interested in making books, as well as people who have been making blank books and want to work on content.

Fun Fact: The instructor of this course, Esther K. Smith, has published a number of books on making artists’ books, exploring a variety of creative and accessible book structures.


Required Materials:

  • bone folder
  • awl
  • textbook: HOW TO MAKE BOOKS
  • optional– collage materials, rubber stamps, stamp pads
