This in-person workshop takes place at CBA across four sessions on Mondays February 7, 14, 21, 28 from 6–9pm ET:

About the Workshop:

This in-person beginner’s course on letterpress printing is taught by artist and CBA Instructor Roni Gross.

In the workshop, students will learn the basics of hand typesetting, how to print on CBA’s Vandercook presses, and the process of editioning. Gross will teach the essentials of printing hand-set type like inking and impression and selecting typefaces and paper. Additionally, Gross will lead show students how to properly clean up and maintain the presses for consistent results.

This class is ideal for those who wish to learn to print simple text-based projects on the Vandercooks such as business cards, correspondence cards, and/or poetry and prose.

Class size is limited to ensure an optimal student-to-teacher ratio. Register now before the remaining spots fill up!


Required Materials:

All staff, artists, students, and guests are required to show proof of vaccination upon entering CBA and must wear a mask covering the nose and mouth at all times. If you have a medical or religious exemption, please email corina@centerforbookarts.org.

  • Pencil and paper for taking notes
  • Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get stained or dirty

All other materials and tools will be provided by CBA at no additional cost to the students.


About the Instructor

Roni Gross is a book artist whose work is in the collections of The Library of Congress, Harvard, Yale, and many other public and private collections. She runs Z’roah Press which produces limited edition sculptural books.

Gross has been an instructor at Center for Book Arts teaching letterpress technique and much more for a number of years. In 2019 she initiated the Book Talk series that continues to feature a diverse range of artists and scholars.
