Protect and Cover! Introduction to Boxes (Summer 2021)

This workshop takes place across two sessions in a weekend intensive:

  • Sat July 31st, 11am-5pm ET
  • Sun August 1st, 11am-5pm ET

This class will take place in-person at Center for Book Arts. There are only eight spots open in this workshop due to our limited capacity in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. All staff, artists, students, and guests are required to wear a mask during the entirety of the class. If you do not have a mask when you arrive, one will be provided for you. Please call ahead at 212-481-0295 if you have questions or needs.

In this course, students will create a portfolio with ties, a lidded box, and a drop-spine clamshell box. Boards for the two boxes will be pre-cut. No binding experience necessary.

Required Materials

  • Ex-acto knife with fresh blades*
  • Bone folder*
  • sharp pencil and eraser
  • Recommended: a teflon folder*

All other materials and tools will be provided. *Materials marked with an asterisk are available for purchase at the Center.

About the Instructor

Lee Marchalonis runs a bookbinding and stone lithography studio in Detroit and teaches printmaking at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She has an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a Certificate in Book Arts and Technologies from the Center for the Book at the University of Iowa.
