About the Workshop:

Center for Book Arts is pleased to partner with Poster House and the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York for a one-of-a-kind workshop with famed letterpress printer Dafi Kühne.

Through a play-centered approach, participants will be invited to explore the potential of a single common material for printing block production—chipboard. Chipboard is a cheap and malleable material often found in book artists’ studios and, as such, it will provide the foundation of this workshop. Visually, it provides possibilities ranging from rough aesthetics to very precise details and is perfect for iterating on press.

Working quickly from the drawing table to the press bed and back again, participants will engage with real-time printed results that inform successive experiments. Throughout the workshop, the group will systematically analyze, discuss, and categorize these samples to develop a visual vocabulary that can be used in design. At the end of the second day, participants will work in groups to document the range of their new collective aesthetic language. Each participant will go home with a printed record of these experiments and proof of Kühne’s unique framework for exploration in design.

This workshop is open to designers and artists as well as to printmakers of all levels. No letterpress experience is required.

Bio

Dafi Kühne is a Swiss designer and letterpress printer specialized in poster productions. Though printed with printing technology from the past century, his work does not look like stereotypical letterpress prints. In his vast studio a little outside of Zürich, Switzerland, he uses a wild mix of analog and digital tools to produce large format posters for cultural institutions. His mostly typographic posters have won international poster awards and been in exhibitions all around the globe.

In conjunction with the workshop, a selection of posters by Dafi Kühne will be on view at the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York starting April 23, 2024.
