About the Workshop:

This virtual workshop is taught by CBA instructor Iviva Olenick.

Participants in this workshop will learn how to create an embroidery sampler on fabric and paper, and will learn how to use different stitches to create text, line, and volume on paper and fabric. The class will include a demonstration and participatory activity in learning running stitch, back stitch, split stitch, French knots, and more, and students will practice these stitches on paper and fabric.

In this class, you’ll review how to pierce holes in paper for embroidery, learn about textile based materials that can be use for bookmaking, and practice using lightweight interfacing under paper to help stabilize it. You’ll receive video resources and instructions for creating sampler stitches, and study artists who use embroidery as part of their practice. Don’t miss this chance to develop a new understanding of embroidery and book arts! This is part 2 in a series of three workshops focusing on textiles and book arts. This will prepare you to participate in part 3, where you’ll learn how to create simple book forms with the fabric and paper that you’ve used in this class.

Required Materials:

  • Fabric
  • Embroidery needles & threads
  • An embroidery hoop
  • A pair of scissors

More detailed materials lists will be provided in the email sent upon registration
