Paper-cutting Basics (Fall 2021)

About the Workshop:

Taught by paper-cutting artist and CBA Instructor Béatrice Coron, this two-hour virtual workshop – for students new to paper-cutting – covers the basic principles and techniques of the art form.

The workshop begins with a presentation on the history of paper-cutting and then transitions to fun instructional exercises. Students will learn how to adapt photographs with paper-cutting and designing multi-color mini books. Coron will also share tips, tricks, and resources so students can continue paper-cutting in the future.

Class size is limited to ensure an optimal student-to-teacher ratio. Register now before the remaining spots fill up!

Required Materials:

• X-acto knife, extra blades
• Cutting mat
• Origami papers
• Tracing paper (or transparent paper such as parchment or freezer paper)
• A few sheets of copy/printer paper
• Glue
• Stapler
• Scotch tape
• Photocopy of an image you want to adapt to papercutting

Optional Materials

• Extra letter-size sheets of paper (can be from recycling)
• Larger format papers (you can assemble US letter paper, or used Tyvek envelops from UPS/USPS/FedEx, or use  any other large paper you may have – for instance, rolls of craft/wrapping/wallpaper)
• Old magazines
• Plastic bags
• Art/decorative papers

About the Instructor

Paper-cutting artist Béatrice Coron was born and raised in France and lived on several different continents before settling in New York City. She pursues visual storytelling through paper-cutting – creating artist books, digital animations, and public art. Her work can be seen in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Walker Art Center. She has completed public art projects for transit systems in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
