bookworks by young people
As part of its Educational Outreach Program, the Center for Book Arts presents this special exhibition of bookworks by young people entitled “Cultural Autobiography.” This exhibit features books by high school students a week-long, tuition-free course offered the Center in August. This class was attended by eleven students of diverse backgrounds…and was taught by Cheryl Shackelton Hawkins, a book artist working in the field of conservation.
Each student learned how to make three types of books: a concertina binding, an accordian fold, and a single section pamphlet.
Support for the Center for Book Arts’ visual arts programming is provided, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
