Monica Stauss said of the exhibit: “At first glance, this exhibition of bookworks by women is so richly varied as to defy categorization. But once the eye has taken in the sensuous surfaces, the range of imagery, the complex structures, the feats of technical skill and fine workmanship, an organizing principle seems useful in discerning the different approaches to the book form.
By its nature, as a one-of-a-kind object, the artist’s book-contemporary phenomenon though it is-harks back to he experience of the book prior to the discovery of printing…
These pieces fulfill the two requirements to a successful artist’s book-a pleasure for the eye and a challenge to the mind.”
Support for the Center for Book Arts’ visual arts programming is provided, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
