Vico’s Spiral: Half Century of Artists’ Books

"Square Route", Lesley Foxcroft, 1989

Fifty years after Center for Book Arts was founded in 1974, we are celebrating this milestone with a landmark exhibition focused on its own exhibition history. The overarching theme is the innovative nature of the range & diversity of artists’ books concepts & practices through the lens of Vico’s Spiral: his nonlinear vision of history has proved to be a very useful tool when approaching the recurring ideas and breadth of methodologies presented these past fifty years.

Lead support for the exhibition Vico’s Spiral: Half Century of Artists’ Books and its catalog is provided by the Henry Luce Foundation, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts; the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.
