Catherine Alice Michaelis

Bio

Catherine Alice Michaelis has been making artist’s books, broadsides, and prints since 1990. Largely inspired by nature, she prints on everything from magnets to matches. Michaelis was featured by Craft in America for their “Nature” episode on PBS in 2017. Her artists’ books are in more than ninety international collections, including the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., the British Library, and the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa. Michaelis first began curating artist’s books in 1997, at Vashon Island Allied Arts on Vashon Island, WA. She is currently Associate Director of the Cynthia Sears Artists’ Books Collection on Bainbridge Island, WA. As Associate Director, she produced and hosted the first twenty-one episodes of the Artist’s Books Unshelved video series, and continues as producer. Currently, Michaelis curates artist’s books exhibitions for Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and beyond, plans related programs, and has completed her fourth book project.
