CLAIRE MARCUS has a special interest in landscape’s power to evoke memory and narrative. Born and raised in New York, she has lived in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania since 2003, where she has access to industrial, rural, and urban subjects. Her work in book formats and mixed media is created with photography, printmaking, drawing, and surface design techniques. It reflects her background as a fifth generation fiber artist, synthesizing family heritage with training in painting and architecture.

Marcus has exhibited book and mixed media works at the Book Arts League; Book Week Scotland; Cincinnati Book Arts Society; Columbia University Teachers College; East Falls Zine Library: Kalamazoo Book Arts Center; Philadelphia’s Art in City Hall; Philadelphia Center for the Book; Philalalia at the Tyler School of Art; St. John’s College Annapolis; and Turn the Page Artist’s Book Fair. She received a Lackawanna County Arts and Culture grant for her photographs of Steamtown National Historic Site. Her work is part of the Al-Mutanabbi Street SHADOW AND LIGHT photography project, remembering Iraqi artists and academics lost to war.

Claire Marcus holds MFA and BFA degrees in painting and a BA in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied with painters Rackstraw Downes and Neil Welliver and photographer Rudy Burckhardt. She has conducted standards-based, preschool- adult residencies and community arts projects for groups including One Book One Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts since 1998, working with a range of populations including adjudicated youth and adults.
