About the Workshop:
This in-person class at Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Maria Pisano.
Paste papers are a gateway to creating unique patterned papers for one’s own artistic practices. These papers have been used throughout history by bookbinders and cabinet makers (to line cupboards, chests and boxes) in addition to being used to decorate walls and ceilings. In this workshop, you will investigate the myriad possibilities inherent in this medium: paints, choice of papers/boards, materials, formulas, making an edition and more. You will also delve into the creation of unique surface patterns with the use of multiple implements including found objects, brayers, stencils, and an array of direct and indirect modes of making marks. Class discussion will center on the versatility and multi-use of these papers and will culminate with making a sample book with your designs.
Required Materials:
- Sponge brushes
- Mark making tools – think creatively – such as: wooden coffee stirrers, corks from bottles, bread plastic closures, sponges, combs, commercial stamps with designs, tooth brushes
- Tools for binding, such as: awl, needle and thread, bone folder, ruler, triangle, snap blade knife
All other materials will be provided by Center for Book Arts at no additional cost.
