About the Event

Center for Book Arts is excited to host Covid d’État: An Interview with Gaylord Schanilec and Russell Maret. In 2021 Gaylord Schanilec and Russell Maret each published works dealing with the global Covid-19 pandemic, and the constitutional crises embodied in the 2020 Presidential election. In contrast to each artist’s typically personal work, both books stood out for their explicit political content. Schanilec’s book, American Crow, besides a series of Covid related ruminations, uses the metaphor of the crow (latin name Corvid) as a lens through which to critique the current state of American politics; while Maret’s book, Three Constitutions, uses typography, redaction, and digital interference to comment on the flaws in originalist constitutional thinking. The talk will consist of brief presentations by Schanilec and Maret, followed by a discussion moderated by rare book librarian, Jane Siegel.
