This in-person workshop takes place across a weekend intensive on Saturday & Sunday, October 23–24 from 11am-5pm:

About the Workshop:

In this in-person introductory class with Instructor Sarah Smith, you will learn the basic use of bookbinding tools and materials, along with bookbinding structures. Students will learn about non-adhesive structures, bindings for single sheets, and other bindings that can be made with little specialized equipment.  Accordions, pamphlets, drum leaf books, and a variety of softcover bindings will be taught during the course.

This class is ideal for those who wish to learn simple forms for presenting work, or for building fundamental knowledge on bookbinding.

There are a total of eight spots available in this workshop due to CBA’s limited capacity during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Register now before the class fills up!


Required Materials

All staff, artists, students, and guests are required to show proof of vaccination upon entering CBA and must wear a mask covering the nose and mouth at all times. Please email info@centerforbookarts.org if you have any questions.

  • Pencil and paper for note-taking
  • Bookbinding awl *
  • Bone folder *
  • Olfa silver knife and blades *, or exact-o knife

*Materials with an asterisk next to them are available for purchase from CBA’s shop.

All other materials and tools will be provided at no additional cost to the students.


About the Instructor

Sarah Smith is a bookbinder and artist based in Brooklyn, NY. A lot of Smith’s time goes into helping other artists create their work, and she currently works at Small Editions and Harlan & Weaver, collaborating with artists to create editions. After many years of editioning others artists’ books, she has come full circle, focusing more on her own work and teaching bookbinding. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Lower East Side Printshop and Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries.
