About the Workshop:

This in-person workshop is taught by Sato Yamamoto.

Japanese Woodblock Printing introduces participants to traditional Japanese woodcut techniques. Printmaker Sato Yamamoto will talk about traditional Japanese pattern making and then guide you through the steps of designing, carving, and printing a woodblock by hand using a baren over the course of workshop. Participants will have the option of carving and printing a block from their own project (illustration, portrait, pattern, book image) or working free style.

Popularized in the 1800’s in Japan, this style of woodblock printing made art more accessible. Some of the most iconic prints known were made using this style including The Great Wave off the Coast of Kanagawa, an 1831 woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji

Both experienced and beginning relief printmakers are welcome!

Fun Fact: Relief printing is the oldest form of printmaking, and woodcuts have been printed in many ways across the world for hundreds of years.
