About the Workshop:
This in-person class at Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Barbara Mauriello.
Participants will learn how to evaluate books and small objects for the proper box: the box as storage container, display case, protective enclosure. They will learn about the properties of materials (paper, board, cloth, adhesives) and how these materials interact with each other. Measuring and cutting materials, for both single boxes and editions, are two skills which will be developed during this workshop.
Required Materials:
- Bone folder
- X-acto knife (or other cutting tool) with extra blades
- Scissors
- Small metal triangle
- Spring divider (if you already own one)
- Awl
- 2 cheap, hardware store, short-handled brushes for adhesives (1/2″ and 1 -2″)
- Sand paper, medium grit
- Small container with lid for adhesives
- Self-healing cutting mat
- Pencil and eraser
All other materials will be provided by Center for Book Arts at no additional cost to the student.
About Barbara Mauriello
As an artist and proprietor of a bookbinding studio, Barbara Mauriello has spent over four decades making artists’ books, teaching bookbinding, and collaborating with visual artists and writers in producing limited editions of their work in the book format.
Her faculty positions include several New York institutions: Center For Book Arts; the School of Visual Arts; the International Center of Photography; Bank Street College, Graduate School of Education; and SUNY, Purchase. In addition, between 1990 and 2020, Mauriello taught in the MFA program at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia.
