Type on the Streets (Fall 2021)

This workshop takes place in one in-person session beginning on-site at CBA on Saturday, October 23 from 12–3pm.

About the Class

In this class, CBA Instructor Dikko Faust will lead participants on a one-of-a-kind NYC walking tour highlighting historical 19th & 20th-century architectural typography on apartment buildings, manhole & vault covers, paint-on-brick advertising signs, and more. Students will also have the chance to create their own charcoal rubbings of found typography.

Class size is limited to ensure an optimal student-to-teacher ratio. Register now before the remaining spots fill up!

Required Materials:

All staff, artists, students, and guests are required to show proof of vaccination upon entering CBA and must wear a mask covering the nose and mouth at all times while on-site.

• Pencil and paper to take notes
• Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get stained or dirty

All other materials and tools will be provided by CBA at no additional cost to the students.

About the Instructor

Dikko Faust founded Purgatory Pie Press when he was doing grad work with Walter Hamady at University of Wisconsin in 1977. He taught Letterpress and Typography at the Center for Book Arts, as well as School of Visual Arts, Cooper Union, Princeton, Rutgers, and workshops throughout the US, Canada, England and Germany. In these workshops, he also offers his services as Type Detective, identifying UTF’s (unidentified typefaces). For recreational reading, he prefers old type catalogs. He did extensive research for Esther K Smith’s Rizzoli reprint of William H Page’s Specimens of Chromatic Wood Type, Borders &c. Purgatory Pie Press has exhibited at Metropolitan Museum of Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Harvard University and many other art centers throughout the world, including more than a dozen Center for Book Arts exhibitions– starting with CBA’s 5 year anniversary exhibition.
