About the Workshop:

In this virtual workshop for all experience levels, Instructor Shirin Salehi will guide participants through the poetic process of creating an artists’ book focusing on the concepts of time, structure, body, the haptic and the visual sense and the spatial display. The workshop will be driven by group discussions on artists’ book theory through a selection of case studies designed by the instructor. Though conceptual discussion is the basis of the class’ structure, the instructor will work along with each participant on their ideas and intuitions in order to create the initial structure of personal artists’ book project.

The course is open to artists, poets, thinkers, and all creative individuals interested in participating in critique and theoretical discussions related to book arts and to artworks with a specific emphasis on bookness.

Required Materials:

No materials or tools are needed in advance of the course. The Instructor will help each participant identify what they need based on their respective projects.

About the Instructor

Born in 1982 in Tehran, Shirin Salehi (she/her) is a Spanish-Iranian visual artist, art researcher, and teacher living and working in Madrid and New York. Salehi primarily works in the discipline of printmaking though she moves freely through drawing, sculpture/ceramics, artist’s books, and poetry—a passion she feels is informed by her Iranian heritage.

She has worked as an art teacher for many years, written essays on the poetics of the artistic process, and spearheaded conferences in art schools and art institutions including the Prado National Museum in Madrid. She has completed numerous residency programs such as Académie de France à Madrid, Il Bisonte Foundation in Florence, and Fundação Bienal de Cerveira in Portugal.
