All Books None Paper

An exhibition of non-paper books from artists residing in New York, Illinois, California, Oregon and Germany.

Norman B. Colp, Director of Exhibits, said of the exhibition, “Given similar experiences, needs and environments, parallel developments have occurred throughout history not only in the fields of science and medicine but in the arts as well. The addition of the book to the vocabulary of artists’ devices has resulted in the creation of book-like objects both here and abroad.

This exhibition, thought modest in size, presents a wide range of non-paper books from artists residing in New York, Illinois, California, Oregon and from Germany. The art viewer here has an opportunity to see both the diversity and kinship of thee works and, at the same time, rethink his/her definition of ‘books.’

Some of the artists…have maintained the true form of the book by using existing volumes to be cast into plaster of Paris…and polyester resin or bronze…Others have simply referred to the shape of the text…

The four remaining artist have disassembled the basic structure and rearranged the end product in an entirely new format that is still faithful to the function of a book; that is, containing information and making it accessible either with images, text or both.”

Support for the Center for Book Arts’ visual arts programming is provided, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
