Because of centuries of bias and underrepresentation, the study of Black art has often been siloed at the margins. Over the past few decades, the work of many Black artists has started getting the critical attention that it deserves. Nic Caldwell’s research seeks to show how Black artists have contributed to the landscape of artists’ books since the very beginnings of the medium in the 20th century. These artists’ books were infused with themes of connection, political identity, and social justice and displayed a richly Black abstract aestheticism. In this talk, Caldwell explores these themes by looking at two early artist’s book exhibitions that centered Black artists. He will also demonstrate how linked data methods can help us make critical connections between these exhibitions, artists, and works more accessible.
