About Performing Documents: Modes of Assembling

Through the act of interrogating fragments of archives and databases—such as old family photographs, real estate listings, and public funding records, the featured artists respond to capitalist, colonial and personal histories, proposing new narratives for understanding the past. Each artwork strategically reveals, alters, or withholds documents, opening a dialogue around the politics of information visibility and inviting viewers to become participants or students. While the featured artists may not consider themselves ‘book artists’ by trade, they have chosen the networked and reproductive activity of publishing (through various approaches) in response to the content they are working with.
