About this Workshop

This in-person workshop is taught by instructor Ana Sofia Mariz.

Have you been wondering how to make the typography in your project sing? Then come and join me in this inquisitive and collaborative workshop that will offer you a supportive place to expand your skills when designing with type (digital or not).

Bring your typographic project – where the text plays the leading role in communication. It can be a book, a periodical (like a zine or a newsletter), a poster, a set of prints, stationary, or even self-presentation pieces for a job application (resume, cover letter, etc). We’re looking for designs to be reproduced through a printing process or end as a PDF file (where one has significant control over how the type will show to the end reader).

Using straightforward design methodology, we will start by defining a short brief with main goals: framing objectives, target audience, output, and a context for your design. Then, we’ll assess where the typography in your design stands regarding your goals. What is working, and what can be improved?

Having this assessment and an articulated brief in mind (and on paper), we’ll dive into an exciting part: Opening a typographic toolbox of wonders and pulling the resources we need from there. We’ll discuss composition, styles, contrast, weights, spacing, sizing, and more.

The class dynamic will include show and tell, writing, supportive individual and group critique, consulting book references, and browsing through metal and wood-type cases.

Participants are expected to engage in constructive group critique and work on their projects between classes, bringing their progress to each class in a physical form (printed, collaged, and/or drawn). Participants can bring their computers, tablets, notebooks, and drawing tools to work during the class.

No advanced skills are required, but an appreciation for letterforms and design. I’m meeting you where you are in your visual journey through the fascinating world of typography.

Fun fact: We’ll be surrounded by cabinets with fascinating type cases, type specimens, and incredible reference books, making this typographic unraveling stimulating in various senses.

About the Instructor

Ana Sofia Mariz, a Russian-Brazilian designer, now calls New York her home. Her passion for the typographic arts has led her to specialize in designing printed books, working with type, letterpress printing, and type design. Her work has garnered recognition in Brazil and the US, with features in exhibitions in both countries.

With a foundation in esteemed design education programs in Rio de Janeiro, Ana’s journey has been enriched by migration, including her recent move from Seattle, WA, where she resided since 2012, to New York in Summer 2023. These diverse experiences have broadened her perspective, shaping her into a multi-disciplinary designer who applies an inclusive and empathic approach to educate, empower, and enable other creatives to thrive in their own journeys of self-expression through the visual-graphic language.

Featured projects include her poster “The first step toward equity is recognizing privilege,” showcased at the 2023 exhibition “New Impressions” at the Hamilton Wood Type Museum, and Vine Craft, a digital typeface designed for letterpress printing and expanded into ornamentation and stationary patterns.
