About the Workshop:

This workshop is taught by instructor Amber Braverman.

The Platen Press Maintenance course is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively maintain and preserve the functionality of a platen press. Platen presses have been a cornerstone of traditional printing methods for centuries, and are currently an option for printing in studio or at home!

Throughout this comprehensive course, students will delve into the inner workings of platen presses, exploring their mechanical components, lubrication systems, and operational mechanisms. Additionally fine-tuning operations create the best possible prints. By examining the historical press models, students will gain a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship behind these remarkable machines. If you have a press at your home or studio, you can join this course via Zoom.

The course begins with an overview of platen press history, highlighting their significance in the evolution of printing technology. Students will learn about the different types of platen presses, their key features, and their applications in various printing contexts. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the structural composition and functions of the press, including the platen, bed, grippers, inking system, and other essential parts. With a solid foundation in place, students will then focus on the critical aspects of platen press maintenance. They will learn how to properly clean and maintain the press, ensuring its optimal performance and preventing potential issues. Topics covered will include lubrication techniques, roller care, and general troubleshooting strategies.

Additionally, students will explore the identification and diagnosis of common problems that arise during platen press operation. They will develop the skills to identify issues such as uneven impression, misalignment, ink distribution problems, and mechanical failures. Practical exercises and case studies will provide hands-on experience in diagnosing and rectifying these challenges.

By the end of the Platen Press Maintenance course, students will have acquired the expertise needed to maintain, troubleshoot, and restore platen presses to their optimal condition. Whether they are enthusiasts, printmakers, or professionals in the field of printing and publishing, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of preserving the art and functionality of these timeless machines.

Note: Prior experience with letterpress printing or platen presses is helpful but not required. There are a limited number of online enrollments available for press owners who would like to work on their own presses.
