Virtual Bookbinding I: Introduction to Softcover Binding (Fall 2024)

This five-week, virtual workshop takes place on Zoom on Tuesdays, October 15–November 12, 2024 from 6:00am–9:00pm Eastern Time.

About the Workshop:

This virtual class at Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Beth Sheehan. In this introductory class you will learn the basic use of bookbinding tools and materials, along with bookbinding structures.

Students will learn about non-adhesive structures, bindings for single sheets, and other bindings that can be made with little specialized equipment.  Accordions, pamphlets, drum leaf books, and a variety of softcover bindings will be taught during the course.

This class is ideal for those who wish to learn simple forms for presenting work, or for building fundamental knowledge on bookbinding.


Required Materials:

  • Pencil and paper for note-taking
  • Bookbinding awl
  • Bone folder
  • Olfa silver knife and blades, or exact-o knife
  • Bookbinding needles
  • Linen thread
  • PVA Adhesive
  • Text weight paper
  • Colored cover-weight paper or yardstick

About the Instructor

Elizabeth (Beth) Sheehan is a printmaker, papermaking, and book artist living in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Her work investigates ideas of memory and perception to explore her own lack of episodic memory.

Sheehan’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Center for Book Arts, and the San Francisco Public Library.

She has worked as a professional printer at Durham Press in Pennsylvania and at Harlan and Weaver in New York. She was also the Lead Binder and Bindery Manager at Small Editions in Brooklyn and teaches paper, print, and book workshops around the country.
